The Crazy Lady from the Laundromat

JC Smith
The Crazy Lady from the Laundromat

You might remember as a child going to the laundromat or some other local neighborhood or block gathering place. She was always there, cigarette ever present, hair in rollers, greasy face, wearing a house dress and furry slippers – the crazy lady from the laundromat. She knew everyone and no one. She talked incessantly about everyone in the neighborhood and always had the latest gossip and an opinion to share. Most tried to avoid her. Many used her in their own efforts to spread gossip about other people – only she did not realize she was being used and how people laughed at her over dinner. The stereotype holds true as most chiropractors know that getting their news from JC Smith is like getting news from “the crazy lady at the laundromat.”

You may have been unfortunate enough to receive “news” from Dr. J.C. Smith over the past few years. As you are aware Smith’s e-mail rants are filled with lies, character assassinations, rude and offensive statements, misrepresentations, and disturbing insinuations. So vile and filled with hatred are his rants that it has become clear to most everyone that, like the crazy lady in the Laundromat, he is unstable and in need of psychological help. Even the ACA is now attempting to distance itself from him after giving him an award.

Regardless of the reality that his writings are a reflection of his instability and that much of what he writes cannot even be taken seriously, some of it requires a response since those who are less politically savvy might take some of what he writes at face value. Just like the housewife falsely accused of indiscretions must address the crazy lady from the laundromat.

The following is the beginning of an effort to expose JC Smith for what he is – a sorry, disenchanted, vengeful person who has so little in his life to provide happiness that he has resorted to spending a large portion of his life on his own pathetic vendetta, hanging out in his own perpetual laundromat waiting for the next newcomer to the neighborhood to get tangled in his web of distorted reality.

Smith Tries to Bring Down Life

JC Smith and Daryl Wills
JC Smith Receives Award from Dr. Daryl Wills

Perhaps the best place to start is somewhere in the middle. JC Smith began his diatribes during the early stages of Life University’s trials and tribulations with the Council on Chiropractic Education. One even wonders what the connection is between him, the CCE, the ACA and Life’s temporary and illegal loss of accreditation since it is well known that Smith was and is in regular communication with the past Chair of the Commission and several members of the Board of the CCE and the ACA - just as there were always a few people who seemed to hang around the crazy lady and pump her for information.

Let’s begin in 2002 when Dr. J.C. Smith received the American Chiropractic Association’s “Outstanding Service Award to the Chiropractic Community” which was presented to him by Dr. Daryl Wills, the Former President of the ACA. They gave him the award for all of his “reporting” efforts during the battle between CCE and Life.

This award was bestowed upon Dr. Smith during the same time that the Council on Chiropractic Education had taken away Life University’s College of Chiropractic’s accreditation. Incredibly, in a press release from the ACA immediately following CCE’s withdrawal of Life’s accreditation the ACA stated:
“We applaud the fine efforts of the CCE, both past and present, to protect the integrity and quality of chiropractic higher education.”

Louis Sportelli
Is there subtle brainwashing going on in this institution?

One has to wonder how the ACA “knew” that CCE’s actions were in earnest and why the ACA would “applaud” the “fine efforts” of the CCE during a time when students, faculty and alumni were undergoing such a horrific experience. It seems the ACA shares some insensitivity with JC Smith – among other things.

This should come as no surprise since long time ACA puppeteer, Louis Sportelli’s wrote a column several years ago, “Our Image in the Media.” In it, he says, of Dr. Sid Williams, then president of Life Chiropractic College: “He is on a mission to save the world. What kind of mission needs to be determined? Some chiropractors may laugh when they read the articles (about Williams which appeared in the Atlanta Constitution), others may feel a sense of despair in knowing that in 1995, chiropractic is still generating front page exposes with cult-like undertones.”

Sportelli on Life

Sportelli called for a “new look at the accreditation status” of colleges like Life, asking, “Is there a subtle brainwashing going on in this institution? Is there any fraud or misrepresentation being used to recruit students? … the profession of chiropractic will have to decide soon: Is this the image we want to portray to governments, insurance companies, MCO’s, prospective students, potential patients, and the MEDIA, whose influence shapes the lives of each of us?”

He then reassures readers, “This article is not about Sid Williams, or about what DE means, or about philosophy, but it is really about responsibility, ethics, professionalism, image and credibility.”

Sportelli apparently hasn’t given up on this either since he was heard by many during his speech to the 2004 ACC/RAC luncheon stating “I wish they would all just go ahead and die already”  when referring to those schools and groups that he feels are holding back the progress of the profession.

Despite the crazy lady and her washroom friends, Life University went on to sue the CCE in United States Federal District Court and was granted an injunction, which restored its accreditation. Despite the years of derogatory and defamatory insults and accusations made by Smith about Life University the court disagreed with him, the ACA, Sportelli and certainly the CCE.

One wonders how many Life graduates are ACA members who continue to support an organization that bestowed accolades upon both an individual and an organization that sought to destroy the existence of their alma mater. One wonders if these Life/ACA members understand the emotional ramifications and the legal implications of not having an alma mater. One wonders why they continue to support the crazy lady.

JC Smith has attacked nearly every chiropractor and organization dedicated to preserving the principles of this profession labeling them such things as “menace” calling them “evil” and making a host of unproven, defamatory accusations and statements. But who is the real menace? And just who is JC Smith?

According to his own website, James C. Smith, B.S., M.A., D.C. began his career in the practice of chiropractic in Warner Robins in 1980.

Who is James C. Smith?

JC Smith
J.C. Smith

What he doesn’t tell you is that his career in chiropractic actually began as an employee of Dr. Sid and Nell Williams. Obviously Dr. Smith did not perform very well since Dr. Williams fired JC and this no doubt left a permanent imprint in his mind and serves as the impetus behind his hatred for the Williams and Life University. Anyone that has read his diatribes where he goes on and on about Dr. Sid and Nell knows that this is a deeply troubled man who cannot escape nor let go of his past or his jealousy of Dr. Williams’ achievements.  It is interesting that he never makes any reference to this portion of his life and career.

What Smith does brag about is that he has a “nationally certified Chiropractic Rehabilitation Center (the only one in Georgia) but neglects to tell anyone who certified it. Probably the ACA through their wanna be PT’s Rehabilitation Association (guess his center isn’t good enough to be certified by Medicare i.e. a real Certified Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility CORF).

Smith says it “reflects his dedication to his patients and teaching them the basics of good health and how to maintain wellness.” Wellness? JC Smith is a wellness doctor now? We’ll get back to that one later. What his rehab facility really reflects is his selfish desire to make money, since if he really cared about his patients he would simply refer them to a real specialist in rehabilitation.

Or does he think his Park Ranger degree and weekend Sociology of Sport degree give him the credentials to “rehab” people? He freely admits his chiropractic training didn’t do it.

Notice also that he doesn’t list any of his staff and brag about their credentials on his website. Chances are he has a bunch of high school kids in white lab coats holding clipboards putting people on his spinalators while he bills all his PI cases to the tune of $180.00 a visit.  I’ll bet he has to keep those roller tables and Body by Jake machines humming all day long to pay for all this space and equipment. No doubt he is bilking insurance companies for these unproven modalities. Perhaps the claims adjustors for all those PI cases should start looking into his practices – especially now that the Georgia Board is investigating him.

JC Smith
My 4,200 sq. fot. facility has over $250,000.00 worth of spinal equipment to help those patients with the worse spinal problems.

Smith himself admits he has a big nut to crack: “My 4,200 sq.ft. facility has over $250,000.00 worth of spinal equipment to help those patients with the worse spinal problems.”

And in case you didn’t know that JC Smith thinks he is better than you and every other chiropractor he tells his patients “Choosing the right Chiropractor is extremely important. Take a tour of his facility to see the difference for your self.”

Georgia Board Begins Investigation of Smith

Recently a complaint was filed by several chiropractors to the Georgia Board of Chiropractic. The complaint was filed after several chiropractors reviewed Smith’s website and found outlandish claims for cure rates, claims of superiority over other chiropractors, false advertising, and deceiving and misleading statements. Incredibly in his response to the complaint that has been filed against him Smith not only admits that he thinks he is better than other chiropractors but brags about it and proclaims its:

“…justifiably so because it can be fully substantiated.”

One can’t help recall all the references to “ego” that Smith complains about in his diatribes against other chiropractors. All Hail his majesty JC Smith.

He goes on extolling his superiority:

“I can’t tell you about how many disgruntled patients who’ve transferred to my office from the Activator “Gentle Chiropractic” guys or the “pop and pray to Innate” chirovangelists from Life Diploma Mill. Once these patients understand how spinal rehab actually works and feel better with our comprehensive spinal care, then they realize that, in fact, our office does offer superior service to these simplistic chirovangelists like Rongberg. Enuf sed, ya folla?”

JC Smith
Georgia law specifically forbids chiropractors from utilizing advertising which conveys the impression of professional superiority.

Since Georgia law specifically forbids chiropractors from utilizing advertising which conveys the impression of professional superiority or other superior attributes that cannot be substantiated and since Smith does not deny his contention that he is superior, it is expected that the Board will order Smith to remove such claims from his website and from his signs.

Who Really Has the Ego Problem?

Smith’s other claims of superiority include being “a well known and respected author and lecturer” Well known by who? The people he sends his e-mail trash to? Author? Does he mean that dumb book about a chiropractor and orthopedist who fall in love – yeah that’ll make the best seller list! Path to Mastery? How about Path to Raping Insurance Companies? He says these are “widely acclaimed” – just because your wife and kids like your books does not make them “widely acclaimed”!

And when was the last time he lectured to anyone about anything anywhere besides National College of Anything Goes. No one else would have him on their campus. At least students and faculty on the campuses where the WCA has been banned still want them to come and speak! I doubt Smith’s phone is ringing daily with invitations from students, schools and organizations.

Smith Attempts to Escape his Roots

While many have certainly called JC Smith a bastard, it turns out that he really is one. You see he has a mixed chiropractic educational background since he attended Sherman and Life and holds his DC from Life – whether he likes it or not.

Smith often belittles his chiropractic education accusing Sherman and Life of giving him a substandard education and being “Diploma Mills”. The funny thing is that he brags on his website that he “Graduated with Honors.” If it’s a Diploma Mill what do the Honors mean? I guess it means he was really good at getting a degree from a Diploma Mill! So since he is cut from the same cloth, Smith is really no different than the 15,000 other Life alumni he so often disparages.

And while Smith continuously calls people like Guy Reikeman “academic imposters” he has no shame about bragging about the rest of his “so what” and make-believe academic background. Smith earned a BS degree in Conservation of Natural Resources in 1970. Wow, bet those classes were hard. Aren’t those the kinds of classes kids take when they don’t want to take the hard classes? Was he planning on being a Park Ranger? Then Smith got a Masters in the Sociology of Sport from Goddard College. Wonder how much time he actually sat in a classroom there? Goddard’s Mission:

“Goddard’s students are regarded as unique individuals who take charge of their own learning and collaborate with other students, staff, and faculty to build a strong community.”

Taking “charge of your own education” translates to: make up a degree you want to get, do some paperwork, fly in a couple of weekends and presto you have a Masters in the Sociology of Sport! You can’t even get away with that at Life!

Finally, Smith enrolled in Chiropractic College went back and forth between Life and Sherman until finally graduating with honors in 1978 from Life Chiropractic College. Though why he points out the honors - no one knows.

Who’s he Mad at Now?

Just like the unpredictable behavior of the crazy lady in the laundromat one never knows who Smith will choose to rail against next. His list of people he hates or has insulted includes:

Terry Rondberg, Guy Reikeman, Pat Gentempo, Larry Markson, Dennis Perman, Bob Hoffman, Tom Klapp, Christopher Kent, CJ Mertz, Matthew McCoy, Dan Murphy, Tedd Koren, Tom Gelardi, Ben DeSpain, Sid Williams, DD Humber, Brian McAulay, David Jackson, Jim Sigafoose, Charles Ribley, Timothy Fueling, Cindy Rondberg, Veronica Gutierrez, David Singer, Don Harrison, Deed Harrison, Arlan Fuhr, Chris Colloca, Richard Plummer, Tim Langley, Deborah Pogrelis, Jay Holder, Reggie Gold, Kim Williams, Nell Williams, Joe Lupo, Corey Rodnick, Bob Braile, Fred Barge, Joe Flesia, BJ Palmer, Candace Pert, John Downes, Jeanne Ohm, Don Hirsch, Ron Hendrickson, Bill Jarr, Jim Parker, Leona Fischer, Mike McClean, Fabrizio Mancini, Kent Greenawalt, Mark Sanna, Shawn Ferguson, Mark Styers….And on and on and on.

The most recent recipient of the crazy lady’s wrath has been directed at Guy Reikeman. Smith continues to rail against Dr. Reikeman’s credentials calling him an “academic imposter, unqualified vendor” and other assorted names while the reality is that Dr. Riekeman has the same or similar credentials as James Winterstein at National, George Goodman at Logan, Frank Nicchi at NYCC, Alfred Traina at Northwestern, Donald Kern at Palmer, Fabrizio Mancini at Parker, Carl Cleveland at Cleveland KC and LA, Richard Brassard at Texas, Gerry Clum at Life West, Joe Brimhall at Western States, as well as some of the recently retired presidents from these same schools: Shelby Elliot, Bill Dallas, Thom Gelardi and Ken Padgett.

Dr. Smith’s suggestion that Dr. Riekeman is somehow less qualified than all of these other chiropractic college presidents is downright dishonest. These other chiropractic colleges seem to do quite well with accreditation agencies with their “unqualified” presidents. Interestingly some of these other Presidents support Smith’s efforts and don’t realize Smith is insulting them since they have the same credentials.

That Guy is the Worst Nuisance on the Beach

JC Smith
Smith Jan. 04

We began the arduous task of exposing JC Smith for what he is – a sorry, disenchanted, vengeful person who has so little in his life to provide happiness that he has resorted to spending a large portion of his life on his own pathetic vendetta. And what a sad pathetic little man he is turning out to be.

JC Smith
Smith Jan. 05

So stressed out over recent events in the profession that recent photos of him even show a metamorphosis not unlike the new Ukrainian President who was poisoned.

We discussed his ties to the ACA and the reality that no one at the ACA is man enough to say everything he says so they use this sorry sack of wet mice to do their dirty work. Imagine if your whole existence boiled down to spending your time spewing nonsensical ravings at the bidding of the girly-men at the ACA. How poor and utterly pathetic would one have to be?

Chapter One also exposed Smith’s futile attempts to play a part in the downfall of Life University. It exposed the ties between the CCE, the ACA, Sportelli and the political machine that has attempted to overrun the very principles this profession was based on. How sad and utterly dejected Smith must feel having heard that Life passed their accreditation review with CCE and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools with flying colors.

We also exposed who JC Smith really is. He is simply a “wanna be academic” who got a distance education degree in how to be Yogi Bear – or better yet, Boo Boo. Perhaps his rantings are just extensions of his rage at someone who stole his picnic basket.

Chapter One also exposed the fact that Smith’s hatred for principled chiropractic actually stems from the fact that he was a less than stellar employee of Dr. Sid Williams. So bad was Smith’s performance that Sid fired him. What would you give to have been in the room when Sid canned his ass? I’m sure it was better than any of Trump’s firings!

We also shed light on Smith’s 4200 sq foot money pit – his rehab clinic. The clinic he can’t get certified by any real accrediting agency so the ACA put their stamp of approval on it for him.
We exposed his stupid, self-published books including one about a love affair between a chiropractor and an orthopedist. If that alone does not give you an insight into this guy’s personality and self esteem issues – nothing will!

Lastly, we left off with the announcement that complaints had been filed against Smith with the Georgia Board of Chiropractic. You see, Smith thinks he’s better than all the rest of you chiropractors and his ads, website, and signage all attest to how much better he is than all of you. Truth is, as much as Smith rails against Life and Sherman he is actually a bastard mongrel of both schools. Perhaps this is what fuels his sick and demented ravings. It might take an exorcism to rid Smith is his evil demons.

Yes, it’s been a rough year for James Charles Smith and 2005 is poised to torment him even more as he deals with the growth and expansion of subluxation-based chiropractic.

Georgia Board Investigates JC Smith

After receiving several letters of complaint from Georgia chiropractors about his website and sign in front of his office the Georgia Board investigated JC Smith and apparently held a hearing on him. According to a letter from the Board dated December 14, 2004 they have completed their investigation. If you are one of the doctors who filed a complaint you should contact the board and request a copy of their decision.

The following is a copy of one of the complaints that was filed:

March 30, 2004

Georgia Board of Chiropractic Examiners
237 Coliseum Drive
Macon, GA 31217

To whom it may concern,

I wish to file a complaint on:
James C. Smith D.C.
License number: CHIR001309.
1103 Russell Parkway
Warner, Robins, GA 31088

According to his website, Dr. Smith utilizes a piece of equipment called the DRX9000 and he claims that he has an 86% cure rate using this machine. This 86% cure rate is the same statistic that can be found on other individual’s websites who market the use of this machine. Clearly Dr. Smith is holding himself out to have a cure rate that is not unique to his office. Furthermore, I was unable to find the scientific literature that proves this device has an 86% cure rate.

In addition, Dr. Smith has numerous testimonials that are allegedly from his patients who had good results with this machine http://www.smithspinalcare.com/tesimonials.htm

However, the same testimonials from the same patients are being used on other websites - for example: http://www.premiertherapyonline.com/drx9000.htm#testimonials

This clinic is in Kentucky and has 3 of the same testimonials as Dr. Smith’s website.Another from California: http://www.drsantucci.com/lowbackdecompressiontherapy/ also has the same testimonials. There are others that can be found by simply searching Google using DRX9000.Certainly these patients are not Dr. Smith’s and in fact there is no way to confirm that any of these patients actually exist. This practice constitutes misleading, deceptive, untrue and fraudulent representations in the practice of chiropractic in the State of Georgia.

Georgia law specifically states that that the licensee shall not utilize any form of advertising which has the capacity or tendency to deceive, mislead, or confuse the recipient in any manner.

Georgia law further states that this includes advertising which contains a misrepresentation of any fact or facts including advertising which has the capacity or tendency to mislead, deceive, or confuse any potential recipient either through false or misleading claims or by failing to disclose relevant or material facts.

Dr. Smith’s advertising additionally portrays him as being superior to other chiropractors by way of his deceptive use of a cure rate. Georgia law specifically forbids chiropractors from utilizing advertising which conveys the impression of professional superiority or other superior attributes that cannot be substantiated.Given the above information and in an effort to protect the public health and welfare of the people of the State of Georgia, I respectfully request that the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners investigate this situation and take appropriate action.

Sincerely,

Life Granted Full SACS Accreditation

Making the torment worse for Smith was the announcement that his alma mater was granted unconditional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools until 2011. This means all the academic and financial concerns are gone.

Smith can lie and rail all he wants about the academic environment at Life but in the end a group of real academicians have determined that the school meets even their high standards. The same standards that any school in the South has to meet. That must be a hard and bitter pill for Smith to swallow. Especially since he had worked so hard behind the scenes with the CCE and the ACA to strip Life of its accreditation as we pointed out in Chapter One.

Smith is so out of touch with reality that he wrote the following after hearing about the SACS decision:

“The vast majority of rational DCs understand that Life is the antipathy of higher education. King Guy may have fooled the $idiots, Evil Vendors, and chirovangelists, but he has not convinced anyone else who appreciates the value of higher education that Life is on the right track. But since most Lifers have never graduated from a real university, they fail to understand the difference between education at a diploma mill and a credible institution of higher learning, ya folla. Obviously the Money Hum speaks louder than having an administration versed in higher education.”

With all of Smiths rantings about the size of people’s egos in the profession he actually thinks he’s smarter than the people who run SACS! I believe he should let some air out of that head of his as it is about to explode.

Smith just can’t handle the revival of Life under the leadership of Reikeman because he knows how this is going to catapult the growth of subluxation-based chiropractic.

Lou Sportelli
Sportelli, "I wish they would just hurry up and die already."

Smith is not the only one who must be upset by Life’s resurrection. Lou Sportelli must be rolling over in his grave at the news. Oops, forgot Lou only looks like a corpse. After Lou’s statement last year that he wished all the subluxation-based schools, organizations and leaders “would just die already” it must be a really trying time for him right now.

Smith’s frustration with accreditation goes all the way back to SCASA but even there he shows his ignorance of history:

“In fact, the straight colleges like Sherman and Life once before tried to paint their own brand of chiro education when they created their own straight accrediting agency, SCASA–Straight Chiropractic Academic Standards Association–but the Department of Education eventually shot it down to establish the CCE as the sole, legitimate chiro education regulating body.”

Smith once again distorts reality. Life was never in support of SCASA. In fact, Sid Williams is the reason it fell apart. No doubt a decision he wishes he never made and advice given to him by trusted friends he wishes he never took.

The Fall of the ACA

Making matters worse for Smith is the absolute failure of the ACA this past year. They were laughed at by the judges and the courts for their ridiculous lawsuits and scorned by the profession and all those who donated their hard earned money to subsidize a law firm.

JC Smith
Smith had better figure out a way to rent out some of that 4,200 sq. feet...

Worse still is the predicament they have now placed their constituency in with the precedent set by these decisions. Smith had better figure out a way to rent out some of that 4200 sq feet since he won’t be getting paid by insurance companies for those roller tables and Body by Jake machines.

No wonder Smith is so upset about American Specialty Health Plans taking over the profession and all the Blue Cross plans. This must be a serious drain on his income. But Smith has his own buddies and Evil Vendors at the ACA to blame - after all they are the ones who started ASHN!

Smith should invest in some cellulite removal machines or perhaps Botox treatments like some of his other ACA buddies are getting into. That might help to cover his overhead for all the wasted space he’s going to have. And since he’s looking a little pasty and limpy these days Smith might want to use some of that gym equipment himself, bulk up a little and get some Botox on those jowls.

The Coalition Grows Stronger

Smith and his ilk were dealt another death blow this past year as the Chiropractic Coalition of the WCA, ICA and FSCO grew even stronger. The Coalition keeps adding state organizations to its ranks and the joint legislative day held in Washington DC was the largest gathering of chiropractors on Capitol Hill in the history of the profession. Imagine Smith foaming at the mouth at the thought of hundreds of subluxation-based chiropractors educating lawmakers on principled chiropractic! And wait until he sees how many show up this year. It looks like the “rascals” that are being “isolated” to use McAndrew’s words is the ACA itself.

ChiroBrawl?

Smith’s psyche showed distinct signs of cracking towards the end of 2004 when he found out Terry Rondberg was registered to attend a conference on evidence based chiropractic sponsored by the FCER and held at Southern California University of Nothing Chiropractic. Just as a 9-year-old child would try and pick a fight in a playground Smith shows his real level of sophistication.

“Rumor has it that Terry Rongberg, imposter par excellence, has registered for this event, which is a surprise since his brand of chiropracTORs usually espouse an anti-science, faith-based approach to chiropracTIC, ya folla.

JC Smith

If he does show up, this might be an opportunity for the mainstream DCs to confront TR for his years of manipulating this profession with his yellow journalism, his demagoguery, his impersonation of an association, his conflict of interests as a publisher/vendor, and his overall interference with our legislative efforts. You know the story by now, so it will delightful to “talk” with TR about his issues that concern us all. Perhaps for the first time he will be held accountable outside his Chiro Coalition circle of influence. Actually, I’ll be surprised if he shows his face.”

JC Smith

Smith called him and others names like “girlyman.” This is not a man with 52 cards in his deck.

What does it say about the integrity and maturity of the people at FCER that they would feed information to JC Smith about people who were registering to attend the conference? These are the people you are trusting with your money to do research? While the FCER tries to maintain a persona of inclusion – clearly we need no more evidence than their support and encouragement of JC Smith to know what their real agenda is.

Needless to say, Dr. Rondberg did attend the conference and despite Smith’s threats the only person that said anything to him was Smith when he handed him his business card.

You see Smith paints himself as this brawny, tough intellectual who is out to save the entire profession from the wrath of the Evil Vendors. But he’s really just a sad, little, scrawny, pathetic shell of a man.
